Faculties and Departments

Overview

Asia Bridge Program (ABP) is a unique industry-academia collaborative program for students from India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar. Working closely with Shizuoka-based global corporations, the program is designed to educate future global leaders for business and society. The curriculum emphasizes a well-rounded interdisciplinary education with a focus on a combination of technical expertise, business sense, scientific thinking, and interpersonal skills through which students grow as liaisons between Shizuoka and their home countries.
ABP students are eligible to study in any faculty and department they choose. All subjects are open to ABP students.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

One of the largest faculties in Japan with integrated courses in humanities and social sciences, which involve the study of various academic areas related to human life. Combining classwork and fieldwork, it provides students with a living knowledge of the areas of study, and in-depth expertise.

Department of Social and Human Studies
The Department offers education in five areas: philosophical anthropology, sociology, psychology, cultural anthropology, and history.
Students cultivate a broad perspective on modern society and capacity for investigation, and will have many opportunities for interaction with the surrounding community.
Department of Language and Literature
The Department offers education in three areas: Japanese & Asian language and literature, European & American languages and literature, and comparative languages and literature.
Students may pursue their interests laterally through enrollment in courses offered by other departments.
Department of Law
Through broad study in the fields of law and politics, students will develop the capacity to analyze and address a wide range of modern social phenomena, progressively deepening their education during a unified, four-year course of study in small-class settings.
Department of Economics
The Department draws on a wide range of specialist research, with attention to both modern society and history in Japan, Asia, North America, and Europe, to explore economics.
Students will participate in a stimulating, four-year unified seminar to cultivate their capacity for problem identification and solving.

Faculty of Education

Among national universities, Shizuoka University’s Faculty of Education maintains a large-scale teacher training faculty with a rich variety of course selections that affords students the opportunity to approach their chosen subject from a variety of directions.

Faculty of Informatics

Information and telecommunications technology is rapidly progressing, but this progress is creating new social problems. Interdisciplinary research is necessary to achieve harmony between information technology, and society and humanity. This research should combine existing information engineering with social sciences and humanities. Shizuoka University’s Faculty of Informatics was the first department at a national university to combine humanities with engineering.

Department of Computer Science
Informatics approaches information from an engineering perspective. We will pursue advanced knowledge and technology through the application of specialized information technology in order to create harmony amongst individuals and in society.
Department of Behavior Informatics
A brand-new department launched in Spring 2016. More information is coming soon…

Department of Socio-Information Studies
Information social science approaches information from a humanities perspective, using knowledge derived from the humanities to explicate the influence of advanced informatization on society. We will attempt to determine the best directions for the new information society.

Faculty of Science

We inquire into fields of pure science such as natural phenomena, biology and life science, material science, the universe, and mathematics. The curriculum includes many experiments and learning opportunities which encourage students to apply their own thinking to research.

Department of Mathematics
The Department cultivates the capacity for imagination and precise thinking along with mathematical ability and the ability to think logically.

Department of Physics
Students will study physics and mathematical methods through a wide range of practical training centered on lectures in mathematics and basic science with the goal of becoming skilled, dedicated professionals in fields ranging from electronics and information to academia and teaching.
Department of Chemistry
The Department is home to specialists in a wide range of chemistry, including organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry, biochemistry, structural and physical chemistry, and chemical reaction dynamics. Students will develop direct knowledge through a curriculum that stresses experimentation.
Department of Biological Science
Students will study biological science from an integrated perspective centered on the principles of life, and the diversity and environmental adaptation of living organisms, using a systematic approach that ranges from DNA to collections of organisms.
Department of Geoscience
Students will explore a wide variety of geoscience phenomena, including earthquakes, volcanism, magma, crustal movement, metamorphism, and plate movement with many opportunities to get out and collect data and samples.

Faculty of Engineering

Considering the first-hand experience of skilled manufacturers to be important, we carry out education and research with the aim of “Creation for the future.” With a strong focus on nano-sciences, optics, environmental science and energy, education and research are carried out in cooperation with companies and external research institutes.

Department of Mechanical Engineering
In their 3rd year, students choose their specialized area of study, from following 3 courses (i) Aerospace and Environmental Engineering, (ii) Intelligent Processing and Materials Engineering, and (iii) Opto-Electronics and Precision Engineering. The Department produces mechanical engineers equipped with foreign language and presentation skills, which are the required competencies in the modern workplace.
Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
From their 2nd year, students learn specialized knowledge in the area of (i) Information Electronics or (ii) Energy and Electronic Control. The Department aims to produce international engineers who have state-of-art technological skills to contribute to the further advancement of industrial electronics.
Department of Electronics and Materials Science
The course will be divided into (i) Electronics and Devices and (ii) Materials Science and Engineering, at the 2nd year of the program. We aim to innovate new technologies, which contribute to human life and industry. The Department produces engineers who are equipped with in-depth knowledge of materials and devices through hands-on learning and research.
Department of Applied Chemistry and Biochemical Engineering
In this course, students learn about technologies for inventing environmentally conscious high-functional materials and the development of environmentally friendly biotechnologies. We aim to cultivate engineers through research and education activities focused on creating products from biomaterials with new biotechnologies that combine chemical engineering with Bioengineering.
Department of Mathematical and Systems Engineering
The Department cultivates system engineers who can design sustainable systems. We offer education programs on the following topics: (i) mathematical science methods, such as modeling, simulation, and optimization, (ii) fundamentals of information science, such as programming and algorithms, and (iii) environmental science, such as risk analysis.

Faculty of Agriculture

We aim to create a renewable society where man and nature coexist, and to foster human ability that is adaptable in a global society. Focusing on the traditionally developed “science of bio-production,” we provide a broad education based on field science.

Department of Bioresource Sciences
